A consortium of GIS organizations in Calgary has won the right to host the Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) Conference in 2020. This conference is the annual world conference of the Open Geospatial Foundation (OSGEO – www.osgeo.org) and is the annual gathering of users and developers of open source geospatial applications.
The group from Calgary was one of three Canadian groups competing for the right to host this annual worldwide conference and successfully went through the selection process to demonstrate that it could host this conference. The FOSS4G selection process is managed by the OSGEO conference committee and the event alternates between three regions:
- North America
In 2018 the FOSS4G conference was held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and in 2019 it will be held in Bucharest, Romania. Information about past conferences can be found at the website: https://www.osgeo.org/initiatives/foss4g/ . The 2020 conference will be the North American turn to host it.
This will only be the second time that a Canadian city has hosted this event and it will be an excellent opportunity for MGUG members to learn about free and open source geospatial software. The website for the conference is being set up and will be https://2020.foss4g.org . MGUG is excited to support the consortium in promoting this global conference in Canada!
