Description:
With an approximate 60/40 percent split between field work and lab/office you have the opportunity to conduct a project from planning & preparation to analysis and final reporting. With a GIS & Environmental Biology background you will conduct habitat assessment and water chemistry for a small water body fisheries project along with bathymetric analysis by boat on various waterbodies throughout Manitoba. Compile, analyse and create contour data sets for use in Recreational Angling. Use various ESRI products for the analysis and production of Geo Databases, contour mapping along with habitat and water chemistry evaluations. Also assist with public recreational angling educational programs. Laboratory work would involve collecting, preparing and ageing fish age structures. Collection of age structures would be done in a field location or at the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation.
Skills & Qualifications:
 Course and work experience in the following: Geographic Information Systems(GIS), Geography, Biology, Environmental Science or Environmental Studies
 Boating, trailer towing skills and basic mechanical experience is an asset
 Valid Manitoba Class 5 safe driving record, Boaters Certification and ability to travel
 Biological field experience conducting sampling, data collection and analysis and general outdoor skills
 Laboratory experience including the use of microscopes and the use of Standard Operating Procedures
 Experience collecting and preserving biological samples with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
 Skills in ESRI ArcGIS , Arc Catalog, AGOL, and geodatabase principles
 Ability to work effectively independently, in a team environment and/or work with the public
 Must be physically capable of performing field duties and able to lift heavy objects (i.e. 50lbs)
 First Aid/CPR Certification, and satisfactory Criminal Record Check or ability to obtain
Duties:
 Operate boats & use sonar equipment on lakes throughout Manitoba to conduct bathymetric surveys, and collect and analyse data
 Setup water chemistry equipment and conduct field surveys
 Participate in programs to educate public on recreational fishing techniques, equipment, fish identification and regulations
 Compile and produce contour lake files and modelling from sounding data using the various ArcGIS Suite of products and create electronic contour files for upload to GPS and depth sounder equipment
 Collect, prepare and age fish age structures from various locations and fish species with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
 Create and maintain data spreadsheets
 Assist Branch staff with other Fisheries projects and duties as assigned
