Habitat Conservation Specialist

Manitoba Habitat Conservancy is seeking a talented and enthusiastic Habitat Conservation Specialist to join our team. This full-time position will be based somewhere between Cartwright and Melita. Reporting to the Field Manager they will represent the Manitoba Habitat Conservancy (MHC) within the rural landscape, with the primary responsibility of delivering MHC’s Conservation Programs to private landowners, as a member of the Program Delivery Team.

As the Habitat Conservation Specialist, you will:

·       Take a lead role in the delivery of conservation programs including conservation agreements, grassland

stewardship agreements, and beneficial management practices in the region.

·       Develop and maintain an annual work plan for review and approval by the Field Manager that outlines activities

and objectives for conservation program delivery.

·       Undertake direct and indirect communications and marketing activities required to identify candidate locations

and landowners for potential conservation projects.

·       Undertake all the necessary field activities and administration required for the development and completion of

MHC’s conservation projects.

·       Represent MHC in the discussions and negotiations of potential projects, as well as the execution of

documentation related to conservation projects.

·       Develop and maintain Land Management Planning Documentation, including records of annual management


·       Maintain relationships with renters and lease holders, negotiate and coordinate lease agreements that

represent MHC’s interest of wildlife habitat benefits.

·       Attend trade show opportunities to staff the display to promote MHC and Liaise with Landowners and partnering


·       Oversee management of the nest tunnel program, if present in the assigned area.

·       Attend staff meetings and field tours.

·       Operate all MHC equipment in a safe and reliable manner.

You and Your Experience:

·       Undergraduate degree in a related discipline such as applied conservation biology, natural resource

conservation, geography, environmental studies, or an equivalent combination of experience.

·       Three years of experience delivering conservation or land stewardship programs with agriculture producers.

·       Knowledge of biology and environmental systems.

·       Knowledge of current agriculture and conservation trends, issues and organizations in Manitoba.

·       Experience or training in ArcMap and ArcPro Online

·       Excellent interpersonal and written and oral communications skills.

·       Excellent organizational, problem solving, and time management skills.

·       A highly motivated individual capable of working independently as well as demonstrated ability to work well in a

team environment.

·       Written and oral fluency in English.

·       Working experience with Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Word, Powerpoint, etc.

·       A valid Class 5 Drivers License and access to a reliable vehicle.

An Asset would be:

·       On-farm experience with livestock and equipment.

·       Wildlife and/or Fisheries conservation experience.

·       Knowledge and understanding of the Stewart and Kantrud Wetland Classification System.

·       Experience working or living in rural Manitoba.

·       Experience operating all-terrain vehicles
